Danh Vo, born on August 25, 1975, in Bà Rịa, Vietnam, is a Danish contemporary artist known for his conceptual works that explore themes of identity, migration, and cultural history. At the age of four, Vo fled Vietnam with his family, escaping the aftermath of the Vietnam War. They were rescued by a Danish ship while attempting to reach the United States, leading to their settlement in Denmark.
Vo's artistic journey began with his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he graduated in 2002. He further honed his craft at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, Germany, under the mentorship of German artist Peter Rösel.
Danh Vo's work is characterized by its conceptual nature and its engagement with historical and personal narratives. He often employs found objects and historical artifacts, recontextualizing them to explore the intersections of personal memory, colonial history, and global politics. His art is deeply reflective, drawing from his own experiences as a refugee and his broader explorations of identity and belonging.
One of Vo's most renowned works is "We the People" (2010-2014), a full-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty, fragmented into approximately 300 pieces. This monumental project examines the symbolism of liberty and democracy, encouraging viewers to contemplate the fragmented and multifaceted nature of freedom.
Another significant piece is "2.02.1861," an ongoing project that involves Vo collecting and displaying various personal artifacts, such as letters and photographs, belonging to historical figures like Henry Kissinger and Robert McNamara. This work delves into the complexities of power, history, and personal narrative.
Vo has exhibited his work internationally, including solo shows at prominent institutions like the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His art has also been featured in major exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, where he received the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize in 2012.
Danh Vo splits his time between Berlin, Germany, and Mexico City, Mexico.
