Baselitz’s rise to fame started in October 1963, when the gallery Werner & Katz in Berlin showed his first solo show. It featured a work called Big Night, which was so provocative at the time, that the police seized it from the show the night it opened.
In 2008, as part of his famous Remix series, he revisited this particular work and produced the work at hand. Other Remix variations of this work are in important collections such as the Sammlung Würth or the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
